ICH IST EIN ANDERER
I IS AN OTHER
A final collection about the design of ourselves
By Leonie Barth
Estelle: I feel so queer. Don't you ever get taken that way? When I can't see myself I begin to wonder if I really and truly exist. I pat myself just to make sure, but it doesn't help much.
Quote by Jean Paul Sartres „No exit“
Our skin interfaces between our private and the public space; it forms the border of inside and outside. The clothing we wear lies on this skin and becomes an indicator of personality and identity.
The analysis of the environmental impact and the intrinsic value of a person leads to our identity. Who am I and who would I like to be? How would I like to appear?
With everything we experience during our lifespan this self-concept completes our personality. A mirror acts as a mobile self-portrait and as a projection surface to screen our present developments and to reflect the actual condition of our person. By depicting reality the mirror becomes a primary medium to visualize our self-concepts.
Identity does not exist without a visible surface and its reflections. Mirroring ourselves is imperative to construct our own identity.
“I IS AN OTHER” is inspired by Jacques Lacan's “mirror stage” and the resulting idea that our mirror image completes our identity. The presented collection follows the principles of symmetry and expresses the complementation of our egos. Clothes develop through the reflection of their own image. Missing parts are added and existing parts are reflected to create completeness.
