Barbie has always come under criticism for presenting an unrealistic body image to the girls that play with her. Now at 57, Barbie is getting a major makeover and Mattel has finally given in to social pressure and will be producing the iconic doll in varying shapes, sizes and shades, just like actual people.
“The product line to be a better reflection of what girls see in the world around them” says spokeswoman Michelle Chidoni
The dolls in the 2016 Barbie “Fashionistas” line come in three additional body shapes: tall, curvy and petite, (as if the original wasn’t tall enough already) seven different skin tones, 22 eye colors, 24 hairstyles, more outfits than you could fit in any shopaholics´ walk-in closet, and even flat feet that will allow her to stand normally, as opposed to the permanent stiletto curl that she’s used to.
Only time will tell which of the four body types will sell best, but it would be fascinating to see. The dolls can only currently be pre ordered here for $ 9.99.
