Hedi Slimane Leaves Saint Laurent
After 3 years and a half of tenure, Hedi Slimane has stepped down as creative director at Saint Laurent Paris. Although predictable, this departure is another strong blow from Slimane.
From his debut at Yves Saint Laurent in 2012 and until the end, the talented, Parisian stylist and photographer has brought many polemics around his vision and daring decisions, most of the time resulting in virulent storms within the fashion industry, somehow understandable.
Even though over-criticized, it is undeniable that Hedi Slimane's progress at the prestigious Parisian house has been a real challenge for the man, who managed to double the brand's annual sales in only a few months, making Saint Laurent one of the most powerful names within the Kering luxury group.
As a very passionated photographer and artist, his inspiration was taking roots from a multitude of artistic movements as well as the British punk rock music and subculture. Slimane quickly assigned his very own style to Saint Laurent collections.
In only a few years, he entirely revamped the iconic house as well as its image facing the audience. When Slimane took over the position, one of his first disrupting choices was to give up on 'Yves' and change the label's name into Saint Laurent. Alongside, as some other of his controversial decisions, he photographed himself a woman to promote his first men's wear collection. He introduced emerging talents from the rock music stage on the runways, casted music icons for advertisement campaigns, relocated the brand's studio in Los Angeles and, more recently, Slimane ditched ready-to-wear to present his very last Saint Laurent Couture collection in Paris.
As a last shot, he once again, surprised his audience by presenting a music-less, very chic fashion show in a traditional, yet elegant Parisian couture atelier. Inspired by the glamour of the 80's, the glittering collection was showcased in a deep silence, muted atmosphere, accompanied by a narrator voice enumerating the garments in both French and English.
Hedi Slimane's last wink at Yves.. Saint Laurent.
And... That's it !
