These shoes are made from recycled water bottles
Sustainable fashion has been a big topic in the fashion industry due the environmental crisis that today's fast fashion is creating, with tons of clothes and textiles simply being dumped into landfills every year. Clothes made from recycled material could be one solution. We have seen bathing suits made from recycled waste and H&M's efforts to turn their customer's old clothes into something new. And now, a company is focusing on the recycling of another fashion item that people tend to change with every season and trend : shoes.
When thinking about creating a new type of footwear, San Francisco based startup Rothy's came up with a great idea that makes theirs shoes not only comfortable but also helps to reduce waste. Their shoes are knit from water bottles which first are turned into recycled filament fiber and afterwards used to 3D-knit the shoe. What is great is that the machine only uses as much fiber as is necessary to knit the respective part of the shoe unlike common methods were a huge amount of textile ends up being thrown away. The structure made through the knitting process keeps the shoe in shape which makes it more comfortable to wear than other kinds of footwear.
