Here is a quick guide to the secrets gems that are in hidden in the hustle and bustle of the city.
1. Ren Space - M50
615 Yongjia Lu, near Wulumuqi Nan Lu
Nicknamed the Soho (New York) of Shanghai, 50 Moganshan Road is bursting with the colour and individuality. Located on the road are a cluster of warehouses that have been transformed into unique galleries. Ren Space described as an “ocean in every sense” takes you on a magical journey through funky exhibitions and unconventional pieces. Despite being in a gallery the exhibits almost feel like you’ve stumbled upon them. A unique thrilling way to experience Shanghai’s contemporary art movement and explore the idea that art can be found in the most unlikely places.
2. Cho Collector
Room 103, Xintiandi, 199 Madang Lu, near Taicang Lu, Huangpu district
If you’re like me and you can’t start a day without a sweet treat, finding a luxurious chocolate café is always on my weekend agenda. Cho Collector serves a range of coffees, snacks and chocolate drinks tailored to your taste buds. For the chocolate enthusiasts among you the chocolate drinks are sure to live up to your high expectations. The shop caters for all types of chocolate lovers, leaving it up to the customer to decide the type and % of chocolate (white/milk/dark chocolate) they desire. The drinks are topped with whipped cream and a delicious sauce. This cool chic café is the perfect place to destress and indulge on a warm spring day. Take a trip into chocolate heaven and simply let the barista wow you. For the avid chocolatiers, they also offer handmade DIY chocolate workshops.

Located in XIntinadi, spread the bagel is every bagel lovers dream come true and is rumoured to be the best NY style bagel in Shanghai. The small shop boasts a wide range of breads ranging from parmesan to seeded bagel which are baked fresh daily. Is your mouth watering yet? There’s more. The bagels are fully customisable although you can’t go wrong with one of the house specials. If this tickles your taste buds my favourite is the “chicken zest club parmesan bagelwich”.
4. Barber Shop
615 Yongjia Lu, near Wulumuqi Nan Lu
Located in the French concession the barbershop takes you right back into the prohibition era. Once you enter the “barber shop” you need to work out how to access the secret entrance into a speakeasy. (Don’t worry I won’t reveal the secret). The bar oozes 1930’s vibes and is filled with character creating the perfect setting for bootleg alcohol and a boogie. They offer an impressive cocktail list including “Go west, Young Man” a sharp and smooth vodka mix.
5. MVP Secret Party
Everyone longs to be in the know and invited to the most elusive social events. That’s it magazine is letting you in on one of their very own secrets.
