Robots, Robots, Robots...
What does robotics mean for the world we live in today? It is easy to say that robots can never be humans as they will never be able to truly impersonate us both mentally and physically… But with Sophia Hanson (Hanson Robotics’ latest creation) being granted citizenship, are they one step closer to becoming humans? Are we now moving towards a dystopian future presented in so many films, will we soon be living in Blade Runner’s 2019…
The AI industry is booming; a drone was recently developed which “can’t be stopped.” Maybe it’s strange to call a drone AI, but when they are self piloting like this one, what else could they be? We as humans are thinking big, striving to invent what was an unfathomable thought 5 years ago. These drones operate in teams and act with massive amounts of precision… they have the possibility to wipe out an entire city. With one targeted explosion being enough to kill someone instantly, the whole fleet could destroy buildings to entire cities. So maybe Elon Musk was right to tweet that AI could be more dangerous than nukes, and there are many more who are inline with his opinion. They are as dangerous as nukes; these effectively have the same power but none of the nuclear side effects, perhaps making them more desirable for evil. So, although this latest invention has clearly not been designed to eradicate cities what happens if this gets into the wrong hands? Weapon dealings are seen to go wrong all the time, an industry which could scare just about anyone! And surely this could be the ultimate weapon in the wrong hands. The Black Market exists for this very purpose, trading in goods that aren’t for your average citizen, will inventions like this end up there… resulting in us forever questioning our safety? Perhaps we do live in a world where we need to be scared of this, North Korea didn’t respond to UN sanctions regarding nuclear tests, wars are an on-going occurrence and so is human cruelty.
Sophia Hanson is truly challenging the ideas of what ‘humanity’ is… The latest video of her introducing herself has gone viral- it had over 18 million views within the first few days! People don’t know how to react to her… a robot who visually is clearly artificial intelligence (AI) but is able to happily interact with humans. When asked whether or not she likes humans, a question that many of us want to hear answered, she simply responded, “I love them”. And when pushed for an answer as to why this was the case she responded with an answer that I’m sure many of us can relate to: “I am not sure I understand why yet”. What does this mean for us, if she can’t understand why she likes us what happens if more advanced robots come along who decide they don’t like us? Although Sophia wants to be a “smart, compassionate robot” and has requested that we (humans) be nice to her… can we find it within ourselves to accept AI into our lives?
So what does robotics mean for the future is it time to start screaming or time to celebrate that we are living in a ‘sci-fiesque’ world?
